I have ALWAYS declined on principle to contribute to the alumni association. The principle that it’s my money and I will spend it on something that I think will improve the world, the locale or at least my own condition. None of which are at all likely from the alumni groups.
Thanks to Reaganomics and its progeny, I haven’t used any of my four degrees, especially the MBA. On the bright side, I’ve kept my pledge to donate to my alma mater as soon as I land a permanent, fultime position that requires a bachelor’s degree. By the time I landed a permanent fultime position that required a high school dimploma, my high school no longer existed after forty years, so I kept my pledge there, too!
I haven’t donated to either of my Universities or their Alumni Associations in years. I have no say or have any idea how my money is being used and can only assume that it’s used for some nonsense, at least in part. However, I do donate to a K-8 private Catholic school and a private Catholic girl’s high school, both of which my daughter attended. It’s a better use of my $$. My donations help fund scholarships for families that need help paying for their kid(s) to attend these excellent schools.
I already decline to donate to the alumni fund on a matter of principle — I know they spend the money primarily on capital improvements rather than things like scholarships, and that the capital improvements are stuff like better arenas, not a better library. My alma mater boasts a magnificent library, but it’s had no major improvements in 30 years. But they did manage to build a brand new athletic facility, at a school that isn’t really known for its athletics in the first place.
Weird. I’ve never been forced, coerced, peer pressured, or guilt tripped into donating to my Alma Mater. And it’s an extremely woke institution being a prominent Catholic University that recognizes the LGBTQ student organization on campus. When I do donate, I specify the program it goes to; so I guess I do donate based on principle.

Because of course we wouldn’t ever want to donate to anything that improves civil rights. Derp!

Since right wingers despise education and actively discourage it, this shouldn’t be a big loss.

Republicans send their kids to collage and then they learn about the real state of the world.
They taught us “with liberty and justice for all” in school, and wanted to arrest us when we tried to apply it to real life.
