As I recall. in the original Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, he frequently carried a rope, soemtimes using it to prank his great ape friends by lassoing them from above. Or is my memory playing tricks on me again?

Then an airship appeared and docked at the top of the tower. “Hey, Tarzan! Up here!”
