Of course you’ve just wasted more time arguing about the joke than if you’d just said “who’s there?”. There’s no rule that says you have to actually stick around for the “joke”

This is the best definition of a knock knock joke I’ve ever heard.

Sam and Janet is a great knock-knock joke the first time you hear it. Anna Maria Albergetti is even better. And there must be others, but I admit they don’t immediately come to mind.

    “Knock, knock.”

    “Who’s there?”

    “Nobel.”

    “Nobel who?”

    “Nobel… That’s why I knocked…”

    “Knock, knock.”

    “Who’s there?”

    “On first.”

    “On first who?”

    “No, it’s ’Who’s on first?’…”

    A: “Knock, knock!”

B: “Excuse me, I need to see who’s at the door.”

A [musing, some time later]: “I never saw him again.”

This is the most cynical BI ever. Who didn’t like knock-knock jokes as a kid?

As a nanny, and former teacher I have heard more than my share of non-funny knock knock jokes. Fortunately, as a child care provider, I get paid the /ahem/ “big bucks” /ahem/ for the privilege. ;) (Thankfully I love my job and all of my kiddos through the years.)
