Yeah, that’s an issue all right. I’ve seen an analysis by S&P that suggests it will return slightly better than 2 for 1 ($2.8 trillion invested will return $5.7 trillion) so of course the GQP will oppose it with every fiber of their being.
The Senate Republicans won’t pass the infrastructure plan unless they see how it will benefit them and their rich patrons. They’d prefer to see government-built infrastructure falling down. Then they can replace bridges and roads with corporation-built ones, and charge and charge and charge for their use.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…Our democracy is at stake. Look at the Rs new election laws up for scrutiny. President Biden is facing a pandemic like Wilson…an economy like Roosevelt and racial challenges like Lincoln. All with the unrelenting obstruction of Moscow Mitch and elected Republicans. The Democrats need to get the courage to pass the infrastructure bill and get this country moving forward again.
. All politicians basically work for their own reelection. They may sincerely believe that their being in a position of power helps people they care about, or they may be simply interested in keeping a paying job. The result is the same. The voters need to be informed in order to separate the ones who are interested in helping the middle class from the corporate stooges who can then go get a job with their contributors. If you really want to know who a candidate will be working for, look at a site called “Open Secrets”. There are others, but this is a good one. It will tell you who is financing their campaign. We all have to do the bidding of who ever is supplying the money to pay our bills. So do politicians. If most of their money is coming from individuals, unions, or other organizations representing the Middle Class, that is who they are going to work for. If most of their money is from banks, etc, they are going to work for the 1%. They don’t really have any choice if they want to win the next election. To vote their conscience against the 1% would be political suicide.
One less Ford Class Aircraft Carrier and a few dozen fewer F-35 fighters could pay for a HELL of a good start on this… and if some of the defense contractors were to put some of their planners, designers, and engineers to work on things like a truly efficient high-speed rail network, we COULD have the best system in the world…
Involve the people.. point out the position of those senators opposed and call them on it. Do they represent the people.. or themselves.. make it public.
KAL, you left out Republican leadership laying bricks at the tunnel entrance while members are in the weeds kneeling on the necks of those needing these funds and crying “fiscal prudence”.
Ike did something similar with infrastructure. How did he pay for it. Taxes of the corporations. Of course, if the corporations put their profits back in the company no tax on that money and you grow your business. a win-win for all. The GOP is not the old GOP for sure.
The Repulsican Crime Family, according to Mitch McMafia, can’t vote for Biden’s infrastructure plan as it is much too expensive for the taxpayers to support. It is much more prudent and beneficial for them to support the Keystone pipeline with a few hundred jobs and potential climate disaster because of pipeline leaks to move Canadian sludge across US land. Conservative estimates place the new jobs in the hundreds of thousands for an extended period of time to build buildings, roads, etc. What the Canadians must be paying the Repulsicans for pushing a possible pollution express. Those wiley Canadians would have made great Repulsican Crime Family’s members.
Sums it up. The elected representatives are hell bent on stopping their constituents from getting the stimulus they need. Remember this as you drive on crumbling macadam and worry about crossing dilapidated bridges. Think about this as you sit in front of your computer in the 21st century and you have no broadband connection. Remember the names of those who would prefer you stay in the 19th century.
The WPA gave the US infrastructure: sidewalks, roads, public buildings like schools, bridges, dams. It also paid artists, recorded musicians, and funded all sorts of studies of the US, our subcultures, etc. Even with a huge corporate tax and a marginal tax rate (for highest income people) over 90%, the nation’s economy grew more and faster than in any other decade. There was also a much lower inequality of wealth.

Just use scientific notation! $2 × 10*12. The Conservatives will think you’ve reduced the amount requested!
