The WPA gave the US infrastructure: sidewalks, roads, public buildings like schools, bridges, dams. It also paid artists, recorded musicians, and funded all sorts of studies of the US, our subcultures, etc. Even with a huge corporate tax and a marginal tax rate (for highest income people) over 90%, the nation’s economy grew more and faster than in any other decade. There was also a much lower inequality of wealth.
The common claim that college sports pays for itself due to higher donations is nonsense. On average having sports costs more than $1 million per year. It’s a drain on education.
