The state likewise has its own obligation to the couple. A marriage is all about PROPERTY. We are forming a legal union, recognized by the state and agree to be bound by certain laws. This is why so many businesses (and governments) are dead set against same sex marriage, they don’t want to extend the property protections involved in a marriage to gay or lesbian couples.
The ceremony that the Pope (Bless his heart) performed has no legal substance. The couple in this case could get off the plane and each could sign a legal, binding marriage contract on the very same day and there would be no harm, no foul. Well, besides having dissed the Pope.
