Surprisingly, I do have a favorite work of art: "Nighthawk’s. I used to go out and eat at simple diners and looking at it, it just makes me feel nostalgic.

I am fortunate to live about 30 miles from the Dali Museum in St Pete FL. I never grow bored visiting that place with all the amazing works by Salvador Dali on display. It is hard to choose a favorite as there are so many to choose from. It is definitely worth the visit. Through June 13 there is an exhibit called “Van Gogh Alive” as well. It is getting rave reviews. Art museums are a great place for young and old alike to be entertained and mesmerized.

A brilliant and beautiful strip today.

In the final panel, she becomes what she beholds. With art in particular, this can be enlightening and mind-expanding.

Marshall McLuhan, Edmund Carpenter, and Psalm 115 all refer to this dymamic between human beings and the things we create. Whatever we invent (art or technology) changes us… and the pace of that transformation is accelerating.

The changes are often other than and more powerful than we expect. Single example: Air conditioners make us comfortable but they discourage interaction within neighborhoods by keeping people indoors.

The disappearance of most bookstores is an unexpected side effect of home computers. Personal computers were expected to place the knowledge of the world at our fingertips. But they also put the lies of the world in our laps. The speed with which irrational conspiracy “theories” can shape elections and deceive the population of voters is a potential threat to democracy and global stability. Even terrorism is powerfully facilitated.

Don’t worry. I’m shutting up now.

Why is this strip always in browns, greys and black, with hardly any bright cheerful colours?

My favorite, this week, is Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party. It makes my stomach say “Mon dieu, j’ais trés faim!”

One of my favorite pieces of art is the sculpture “Monument With Standing Beast” by Jean Dubuffet. I’m lucky to live in Chicago, which has a LOT of public art… sculptures and murals outside and in train stations. I’m planning a walking tour with a friend who lives on the West Coast for when we can get together.

Listen to explanations about a painting (even really good) when, a little further on, there’s what looks like an interesting marble bust. MAH! Marble is the best, always.

As a native Philadelphian, I am thrilled that Steenz has chosen to focus on the city itself in her most recent strips. “Wawa”, “Gritty”and, today, the Art Museum—-without any reference to the “Rocky”steps.Yes, “The Banjo Lesson” is Henry Ossawa Tanner’s most famous painting, but he also painted my personal favorite “Annunciation”.

In it, Mary is depicted as the olive-skinned peasant she was, neither reverent nor frightened, just bewildered, as if wondering if this is a dream or reality. The angel Gabriel is depicted as a pillar of light—-nothing more—or less.Whenever I visit the Art Museum, I make it a point to visit Tanner’s “Annunciation”.

Very creative, Steenz. Mark & co left Heart & co in the right hands. Good art can take you places.
