In the missing panel 5, Sue the librarian comes over to Elly and says, “Did you really come to work without bathing or brushing your hair? Also, why are you wearing your husband’s pants?”

Old Hippies die hard. Especially after their 1972 dreams went crumbling in the dust, man……

My understanding is that loss of sleep happens to new parents. I have no knowledge of this as all 4 of our kids slept thru the night when they were littles. Now Teen agers OTOH…..

I have been going through this “scene” since my wife passed away recently and the only reason I get up is because my Mother in law still lives with me( our commitment) and she has dementia so it is all up to me until one of US dies.

One of the memorable things about the job I retired from (IT field services tech for a large electric company) was being on call 24/7/365 and having mongo hours when something went wrong. I remember being called to a lightning strike that did crazy damage 3 hours away, just at normal quitting time. I worked 20 hours, got 4 hours sleep, and worked 16 hours. Worse things happen at sea, too.

Maybe there could a strip where Marian and Jim are reminded of sleepless night thanks to baby Elly!

I have said before, I don’t know why Elly chose to go back to work so soon after April was born. Unless they were in dire straits she could have waited until she had better control of things. She could have had April trained better and dealt with Lizzie’s and Mike’s problems without a lot of stress. Working is great but, if your family suffers, who wins?IMO.

If I were her, I’d see a doctor. Those feet look awfully swollen to me.

Perhaps I have a different perception of things, but this is how I interpret comics. The picture often shows how someone feels and shouldn’t necessarily be taken literally. When I have gotten up after a sleepless night (no kids, but sometimes overtime or some other problem), my feet were not big, but they felt like I was walking around on big bricks. Even if I wasn’t slumped and ready to fall over, I FELT like I was. I wore the most comfortable loose clothes possible. My hair got pulled back just enough to look groomed. Elly may not be quite as “slovenly” as she appears here today – she just feels that awful!

I used the same system for years to get myself to exercise: I don’t have to exercise, but do have to /get dressed for it/go to the gym/do my full routine/do it at regular intensity/etc. I almost always did my routine at regular speed. Once or twice a year, I just didn’t feel up to it, and didn’t exercise at all, and went home. That kept the system honest. I really DIDN’T have to, but I almost always exercised nonetheless.
