All of the television stations start showing Christmas shows a month early. I just do not understand it. I always thought Christmas was in December. That is what it says on my calendar.
Every year since I can remember- and that’s a lot of years now- I’ve heard people saying: “You didn’t use to see Christmas decorations going up this early.”
Yes, we did. It’s been going on for ages. Since I was a kid at least (in the 1960s) and probably before. October, even September. Our local Lowe’s has had Christmas and Hallowe’en on display for weeks now. It’s a tradition.
It’s not new. At all.
We just block it out and make ourselves forget, thinking back on an imaginary, more relaxed time we knew, when stores waited until after Thanksgiving.
The fact that this LUANN from thirty some years ago (can’t quite read the copyright year) is mentioning it indicates that it was happening then. PEANUTS mentioned it thirty years before that. It’s not new. You think it is, but it’s not new.

No Kidding: I actually have a house in my neighborhood that is fully decorated with lights, decorations, and inflatables. All lit up. Yuch.

Really dated. Christmas commercials were on TV already in September, and some stores had decorations up even earlier….

And think- this was from 1990 or something. They were already complaining about it THEN.
