If only there was a body in Congress that could have passed the bill the House passed several months back to help in this situation…

How long before Restaurants and bars start calling themselves religious institutions and demand to stay open as they please ? Who gets to decide what’s a religious institution and what’s not ?

So, in Ramirez-Land, Biz(ness) in the form of restaurants is the counterbalance to death by Covid19? Not science. Not medical care. Not sensible isolation practices.

Maybe we could have learned from Taiwan, population 24 million…. back in March, they took the flu seriously, no one said “it’s a hoax,” “it will magically disappear,” ….

    Taiwan today…… 651 total cases, 565 recovered, 7 dead….

And thank the good Lord for giving us such a stable genius to set the arena. Unfortunately, due to a fraudulent election the greatest president ever will not lead the victory parade.. but be assured he will be working in the background to see his plan continue. Long live the King! (if it was/is not obvious /s)

This will be the same with Global Warming… They deny… claim its a hoax… chastise science… politicize the hell out of it… then when they can no longer fool their base it will be … who could have known?

Don’t forget education, especially the students (and their entire families) who “benefit” from the many other services provided by Title I schools, where I spent 20 years of my career in education.

If only enough Americans were willing to follow health and safety guidelines since March, we wouldn’t be in this mess. If only we had a leader who facilitated and encouraged the proper response to the pandemic instead of undercutting it at every opportunity…

A short lesson in “self insurance”. The POINT of insurance (up until it became a player at the federal level anyway) was to amortize risk: We all pay a little bit into the pool, the insurer takes a small part of that to pay for their time and folks who have a disaster get help from that pool. Self  insurance is just the same thing, except “we all” is just the one entity. There are still payments, and the payments still go into a pool, and at need, the various parts of the entity may draw from that pool for emergencies. Here’s the point: The USA is self insured against disaster. Certainly there’s no other  entity who is providing us with insurance, right? But in this case, the pool has already been drawn far down  by the excessive spending of various administrations, particularly  the most recent one. The result is that now, when we most grievously need to draw from that pool to keep our businesses and their employees alive during the pandemic, there’s nothing there!  In fact there’s a considerable amount of debt in that pool. So it’s very problematic to do as we should to keep our economy going. Not to mention the problem that McConnell is an evil sadist, supported by many of the same.

False dichotomy alert! No, our choice is not between saving lives or saving money. Our real choice is either to go on letting Covid kill and impoverish through our inaction, or to take action to get Covid under control which will get the economy going again.

Well, let’s see. I don’t see much turnaround for the economy until we bring Covid under control. You don’t see that many dead people buying lattes and stuff. My hope is that (during the “lame duck” Congress that will be meeting for the next few weeks) that they will finally pass that second stimulus bill (which both parties can take credit for). But it’s more likely that we’ll have to wait for Biden to be sworn in on 01/20. My hope is that both Democratic candidates win the GA runoff on 01/05, meaning the Senate will be split 50-50 (with VP Harris as the tie breaker). We have vaccines coming soon from Moderna and Pfizer (and the ones from Astra Zeneca and Johnson & Johnson aren’t that far behind), and (once Biden is sworn in) we can start quarantining people with Covid and instituting localize lockdowns in states that are really bad (like SD, ND, WI) to bring the rates under control. And pass a stimulus (or perhaps a temporary universal basic income) to cushion the economic blow. But numero uno priority is bring Covid under control and we as a nation achieving herd immunity to Covid (which, I’m hopeful, will be in the second half of 2021). Then we can start fixing the economy. The good news is that experts are expecting the economy to bounce back quicker from Covid than it did from the Great Recession (2008-2009), citing the fact that China and South Korea’s economies are already bouncing back strongly from their bouts with Covid. This too shall pass.
