Strangely, “Study a lot and exercise hard” doesn’t sound quite as good. What’s with THAT?

Kid’s right technologically speaking. Incredible improvements in picture quality, flexibility, and sound. Unfortunately many of us oldsters [first one was 1950’s at our house] might not agree with it from the programming angle. To say that the majority of modern programming lacks a certain believability or definition of real life is like saying the sun is only a light. But, as someone once said, given the world as it is, what else is there to do? Mental Valium comes in many forms.

I don’t know which is worse, the fact that he thinks 20 years is a long time, or that I know that it isn’t?

What are the careers/jobs that require a really good college? What’s left over besides the service industry?

I was going to wonder if any of his grandparents’ TV sets were black and white, we had one in my house growing up but since the timeframe he’s giving starts at 2000…

Maybe be a plumber or a carpenter or some other skilled trade worker and actually make a difference, take home a great paycheck and not have school loans that take forever to pay off.

Choose a Major that actually makes money, not anything that ends in Studies

Franz, you almost had it right. Skip the college and find the right blue collar job/apprentice combo- no school loans, raised a family, be willing to move as needed.

Frazz should have said “And choose a really good career.” College is not the only path to great lifetime careers; there are tech schools (aircraft maintenance is one, electronics is another). The boy may not be cut out for college.

I have to balk at “choose a really good college”. Motivation and interaction with bright and interesting professors is not restricted to ivy league schools. Unfortunately, I know first hand that the “you graduated from where…???” bias exists. So, I wish Mallett had dropped the “really”. Tons of productive and enlightened individuals have emerged from just regular, decent colleges. Oh! and P.S. have you tried to hire a good bricklayer lately… good luck with that.

TV used to last. Took a 4 year old tv to the shop. Repair guy wouldn’t even look at it. They would work on anything over 4 years old. He said they don’t last these days. (They won’t work on anything over 3 years old??!!!)

Those were lots of different TV sets, not one that improved over time. So if there’s a lesson to be learned here, shouldn’t it be that his parents should trade him in for a new model every few years?

But if you’re good with your mouth, clever, shrewd, cunning and a bit manipulative, there’s always politics or sales.
