The older I get, the more I realize that “homework” is an effort by adults to inculcate the habit of practicing what you need to learn into kids who have much better things to do. And it’s almost sort of right: Being a kid is important too. But just a math homework hammers the basics home in your brain, DOING the math homework helps put good habits into your system.
He knows what will get him by without having to do all of it. But his ‘getting by’ probably is much more detailed than for some other kids.
During opening week one year, a student replied to my short story reading assignment with Well, I don’t read a lot. Big grin. I said Thanks for the info. Saves time when I know ahead of time what grade to put in the book. My grin was bigger.

Turn the bagel upside-down, set it on the ground, and stand on your head. Now everything (or at least everything on Earth) is on the bagel.
