Everyone who was surprised that Trump gave up on controlling the virus, raise your hand.
.
No, I don’t mean when they admitted it. Everyone is surprised when they admit stuff.
.
No, it was evident from the beginning that there was never any effort to control the virus. In fact, there was sabotage of governors and CDC who did try to lessen the virus damage.
.
It makes sense though, from the Trump/Republican* point of view.
For one thing, it’s hard. Well beyond the capability of Trump to deal with — a virus can’t be intimidated or sued, insulted, or bought off. Worse, when you try to govern, you will make mistakes and be criticized for them. Trump would never do that.
That’s only half the story, though. The lesser half.
WHY would Trump or any of his family or any Republican* make any attempt to control the virus though listening to scientists, issuing effective guidelines, etc.?
There is NO MONEY TO BE MADE trying to control the virus.
.
Vaccines, though, are a golden opportunity. You start by shoveling tons of money to big pharma — they WILL show their gratitude monetarily and other ways. Then, when a vaccine IS developed, you can sell it at the price the market will bear, along with more government subsidies (and more gratitude), AND you can produce updated, more expensive versions in perpetuity.
Now, we’re talking real money! You know, in case herd immunity is never reached.
Since following the career of his great-great-Uncle Sherlock, Sherman Holmes had never encountered such a baffling case. As this terrible pandemic spread, what was the precipitated cause? As usual, Dr. Joan Watson, noted public health physician, accompanied him in the investigation. Her great-great-Grandfather John had of course worked with Sherlock.
As Holmes chewed pensively on nicotine gum, he gazed at a national map. Clusters of pins indicated daily increasing spread of infection. The number of cases, only a a handful a few months ago, were now in the millions — and hundreds of thousands deaths. Obviously, the situation had been handled badly. But by whom?
“‘Tis puzzling,” Holmes mused, “No person takes blame, although many were involved. Indeed, most deny blame vehemently!”
“Perhaps, my dear Holmes,” Watson said, “a person who denies most vehemently is most to blame. It seems in human political nature this would be so.”
“Elementary, Watson. But that theory it would mean the President is the villain. Such a conclusion is disturbing. Have you eliminated all other possibilities? And … you might leave the deduction shtick to me!”
“My dear Sherman, you rely too much upon familial reputation for cleverness. You are more a politician than an objective detective who goes where the facts lead. The great Sherlock used scientific method, and deduced thereby — whereas you rely on flawed partisan government briefings.
Sherman angrily snatched up his violin, and screeched dreadfully upon it, as he had never learned to play. Watson left, thinking, “Political hacks seem increasingly to ruin public medical and health policy.” She would consult an Italian-descendent named Fauci, a respected expert in Epidemiology. “I hope politics haven’t tainted him. Hmm … I wonder if Moriarty has any descendants involved … perhaps in the White House?”
trump don’t take responsibility for anything that goes wrong. If he or state TV (aka Fox News) can’t spin it to a grand and positive achievement… it is someone else’s fault.
Hoover’s failures to lessen the effects of the Great Depression for many Americans. Hair Groppingfuror’s failures on COVFEFE-45. Future presidential failures have tough standards to exceed.
“Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!” —Winston Churchill, Report to House of Commons, 1940 June 4

Very tiny handprints.
But as tiny as they are, yes, they are all over this TrumpubliCON failure in the primary role of a president: to KEEP US SAFE.
