Sometimes it’s like a dream. When someone starts talking, my train of thought shifts and I don’t remember the previous train.

My waking mind never turns off. Sometimes it’s spinning fantasy, sometimes grappling with angst or a real problem, sometimes working at puns or programming… and sometimes slipping into sleep… and I thought everybody worked that way. Then we had a son who really DID just sit in his room with his mind turned off.

    “What were you thinking about”?

    “Nothing.”

“No, really, everybody has something going on in their brain, so, dreaming about something? Replaying a story or D&D game? Being angry or hungry or bored, or…”

    “Nothing.”

    “Nothing at ALL?”

    “Yeah.”

I still  really can’t get a grip on how anybody can be that way.

“Men have a box in their brain that women are not aware of. This particular box, has NOTHING in it. It’s true. In fact, we call it the “Nothing” box. And of all the boxes a man has in his brain, the nothing box is his favorite box. If a man has a chance, he’ll go to his nothing box EVERYTIME. That’s why a man can do something seemingly completely brain dead for hours on end. You know, like, fishing. They’ve actually measured this. The University of Pennsylvania did a study and men can do absolutely nothing and still breathe. Women can’t do it. Their minds never stop! Zzz-Zzzz-zzzz. And they don’t understand the “Nothing” box…and it drives them CRAZY…because NOTHING makes a woman go crazy like watching a man…doing…nothing!" – Mark Gungor

Words can’t keep up with the thoughts. Every now and then, I will make a comment based on the most recent one. Then my beloved wants to know how I jumped to THAT subject. I can usually remember the reasonable, logical sequence and tie it back to her earlier reference point.

    ………………………………………………………………………..

I pay my neighbor a certain amount to do whatever it will cover and that he thinks needs doing in the way of landscaping, as he sees fit. (He also has free access to land for gardening, access to the nut and fruit trees I have planted, scuppernongs, hunting — especially for wild hogs. But I’d give him all that regardless.)

He sometimes does far more than I expected because his wife drives him out of the house with the order, “Go do something over at the Greens’ to give me some rest for a few hours.”

I see he is bald, so an empty barn doesn’t need a roof!

My girlfriend use to ask me what I was thinking all of the time and I would say nothing. She had trouble understanding that I was thinking about nothing. Thought I was hiding something. She eventually realized that I was not hiding anything and was actually thinking about nothing.
