    Years ago, I saw just that, on upper Broadway in New York City. And not once, but twice, 10 blocks apart.

    They weren’t sinkholes, but excavations (for laying pipes? I didn’t stop to ask), with only sawhorse barriers, which had been overlooked by two drivers (taxis, both of them) who drove right through them, and the holes were big enough that the cars landed entirely inside, flat at the bottom.

    They must both have happened just before I drove by, since in both cases, the cabbies were standing on top of their cars and trying to climb out. 8^o
