    I actually got a “Yikes” out of a Geiger counter one day. My friend brought it to me for repair. When I opened it, I noticed a loose wire. I grabbed the to screw it back in place and “Yikes”. Geiger counters have high voltage in them (fortunately low current).

    Do kids in high school get to play with Geiger counters these days? When I was in HS in the late ’50s we were given Geiger counters by some government agency, possibly for emergencies but also for science class experiments. And we had some radio active samples that produced the familiar beeping, although probably not with very strong emissions.
