I recall a Gahan Wilson cartoon from years ago: A father has his young son on his knee, and both are wearing futuristic full-body protective bubble suits. The father says to his son, “And then one day some wise men realized that it didn’t matter what happened to the environment, so long as we wore these nice shiny suits.” I wouldn’t call Trump and his cohorts “wise men” — more like “wiseguys.”
When Dr. Fauci learned something new as to how the virus was transmitted he changed his recommendation, that is what smart people do learn from their mistakes. President Orange doubles down on his conspiracy theories, and never doubts the stupidity of the American people
And which one of those recommendations wont work? It’s all a matter of “degree of protection”.. and given the rate of infection in the US.. that last option may soon be required.
Dr. Fauci advises, he has no authority to order actions. It was within the president and state governors’ authority to delay or reject such advice, which they did for a significantly long enough period to result in 150,000+ plus deaths and covid-19 still raging throughout the U.S.
I’m glad the scientists and medical professionals are doing the research and I don’t have to. That’s why I go to a doctor instead of diagnosing myself. I do not believe that our truly ignorant President or this cartoonist know more than scientists and doctors.
The list is truly staggering. What follows is a tiny introduction:
When: Friday, February 7, and Wednesday, February 19The claim: The coronavirus would weaken “when we get into April, in the warmer weather—that has a very negative effect on that, and that type of a virus.”The truth: It’s too early to tell if the virus’s spread will be dampened by warmer conditions. Respiratory viruses can be seasonal, but the World Health Organization says that the new coronavirus “can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather.”
When: Thursday, February 27The claim: The outbreak would be temporary: “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle—it will disappear.”The truth: Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned days later that he was concerned that “as the next week or two or three go by, we’re going to see a lot more community-related cases.”
When: Multiple timesThe claim: “Coronavirus numbers are looking MUCH better, going down almost everywhere,” and cases are “coming way down.”The truth: Coronavirus cases are either increasing or plateauing in the majority of American states. Increases in state-level testing do account for some of the increase in cases and, on average, the country’s positive-test rate is lower than it was in March and April. But those numbers obscure the situation in more than a dozen states where, as of this writing on May 27, cases are still increasing.
When: Wednesday, June 17The claim: The pandemic is “fading away. It’s going to fade away.”The truth: Trump made this claim ahead of his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when the country was still seeing at least 20,000 new daily cases and a second spike in infections was beginning.
As usual, Varvel (and the Trumpians) leave out the fact that, during the lockdown, we were asked not to hoard masks so there would be enough for first responders and medical personnel. He never said they weren’t needed. But when the panic started, toilet paper and masks were coveted by everyone.
As I type Dr. Fauci (and co) are getting hammered.. If only he (and co) would have been consistent trump would have been correct and those 15 cases would have disappeared and it would all be over. Listening to the Republican questions.. this whole COVID-19 thing is wholly Dr. Fauci (and co’s) fault.
Varvel is playing his part in a concerted campaign to de-educate the American public. It’s been going on for years, decades. And it’s working all too well.
Odd how Trumpers demand that scientists must be 100% correct 100% of the time, or else that’s “proof” that you shouldn’t listen to them at all (UNLESS they are promoting the Trump line)… while they’re content to tolerate a leader who is wrong almost 100% of the time…
His advice has evolved as we have learned more about the virus. Would you prefer he follows Trump’s strategy of ignoring it instead? We have 15, in a few days those 15 will just go down to zero.
His advice changes as new data comes in. It’s called science. It built the world around you. People who do not change opinions when new facts become available (actual, demonstrable FACTS) are not leaders. It takes a facile mind.
Varvel is, of course, deliberately (or maybe from ignorance??) distorting what Fauci has done. Starting with deliberately trying to keep face masks for the health care professionals (it didn’t really work all that well) while also speaking what was currently known. We now know more, and he’s being forthright about what we now know. Apparently this whole “science is about learning what’s going on” thing drives the rightwingnuts even battier than their normal amount.
Or, take the approach of so many Americans: do nothing and watch hundreds of thousands of people die. But hey, at least you didn’t have to make an effort, put yourself out, or consider the safety of others, right?
Of course if anyone listens to people like Varvel they could face the same fate as Herman Cain. Just wear a mask if you want to be around after the pandemic eventually ends. If not then fine don’t wear a mask and infect everyone around you and risk infection yourselves

Trump COVID-19 Response:
“It’s a Hoax”“We will be down to zero cases soon”“It will magically just go away”“We have it under control”
Reality: Over 4 million cases and 150,000 dead Americans.

If Republicans had done the right thing in the first place the virus would have been over in 4 to 8 weeks.
Republicans did everything wrong and now we are in another Republican made great depression.

I disagree, Concrete.
Varvel is doing what he always does, which is LYING.
Which is what ALL Trump Disciples do, constantly.
.
Varvel also fails to articulate the Trump (and therefore Republican*) policy regarding the pandemic:
