What % of your income actually gets taxed? At what rate? 17%? Do your local taxes pay for you 2 kids education? Yup, darned rich with their loopholes. Let’s get rid of them all.

Lewreader, the top 100 US corporations pay an average of 6% in taxes because of all the fine work their lawyers and pocket-congresspeople do for them. In contrast, those same corporations pay often higher than %35 in other countries in which they operate. BTW, even foreign corporations are skipping out on taxes here. So - other countries are getting our business, we’re paying them taxes, and not paying ourselves. Hmmmm.

@Nab…The movie “You Can’t Take it With You” shows how honest and trustworthy big business was…NOT! The bigwig was only out to put everyone else out of business so he could control a whole block. The lead character wouldn’t sell his property which put the kabosh on the whole thing. There was a kind of happy ending but things weren’t as great as you make them out to be.

Without Kellogg, Post and General Mills, where would you obtain your breakfast? Without Albertson’s, Kroger and Safeway, how would you do just about anything? And for many of us, without big business, what would we do for an income? I worked on a farm once, way to hard a days work for little in return, no way would I want to do that to “earn” my daily bread.
Corporations were declared to be persons by the Supreme Court in the Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad case of 1886. There is controversy around this, as some maintain that the court itself never declared the corporation to be legally a person, but that the interpretation was inserted by a law clerk sympathetic to the railroad. Oddly enough, the justification for this “personhood” was rooted in the 14th amendment (the one giving former slaves full rights), and today you’ll find there are far more 14th amendment cases about the rights of corporations than there ever were about the rights of former slaves.
Robert Reich (“Supercapitalism”) has proposed that the law be amended to explicitly restrict “personhood” to real living people. This would do away with both corporate lobbying and corporate income taxes (as only people can pay taxes). Under such a plan, a company’s taxes would be paid by its shareholders, on their share of the corporate profits (what? shareholders would see the profits instead of executives?), and lobbying/political donations would be strictly limited not only to humans but to citizens (avoiding the situation where a foreign-controlled corporation can lobby and run political advertising to influence government for the good of a foreign nation). Seems like a good deal to me.
puddle, correct me if I’m wrong, but is it not already illegal for any foreign entity, be it personal or corporate, to donate to a political campaign? And isn’t that the issue Al Gore came up against when taking “contributions” from Chinese nuns at a fund raiser in California?
Our Founding Fathers already established term limits by giving us the power to vote out bad representatives every two years. We can reward good representatives by voting to give them their jobs back. If bad congressmen are being re-elected term after term, the problem is with the VOTERS.
And too many voters are “single issue voters”, like the guy here who said he doesn’t care what they do as long as he has his guns. Time to get educated and VOTE.
