The Earth swings further from the Sun in the northern hemisphere summer.

There have been times when I pointed out to others that Earth was farthest from the sun in July. A common response: “Then why is it so hot right now?”

If ignorance is bliss, then so many have achieved Nirvana.

Orbital dynamics and solar output determine the climate. Oh, SUVs too.

So, astronomers break up with their girlfriends by telling them “you’re most appealing when you’re at your aphelion.” ?

With the full moon, it should be the moon’s aphelion too.

The difference between perihelion and aphelion is only about three million miles, a small fraction of Earth’s average 93 million mile distance to the Sun. Still, the Southern Hemisphere does receive about 3.5% more energy from the Sun than the Northern Hemisphere.

That diagram makes it look like the Earth could be closest to the Sun in the Fall and the Spring.

Don’t forget it is Winter in the Southern Hemisphere

Even the comets and asteroids are avoiding us at the moment.
