Dusty: So... all you buckaroos... what kind of a story would you like your foster grandpa to tell ya? Boy: Tell us about when YOU were ten years old! Dusty: Oh, I remember my daddy go me a BB gun for my tenth birthday! Man: Happy birthday, son. Dusty: WOW! Thanks! Boy: I wanted a BB gun but my dad said it was too dangerous! Dusty: Can be, but that's why you'd learn gun safety! Anyway... I'd grab my BB gun and my pal Jessie would hop on my handlebars and we'd ride down to the dump... Girl: Get out!! You rote two on a bike without helmets and played in a garbage dump? Dusty: All day, unless we were swimming in the rock quarry! Boy: Wow! Boy: Foster grandpa... didn't they have lawyers then? Dusty: I suppose so, but we kids didn't see 'em!

I’m 73 so I can say all of that was true, but we lived in a very different world than what surrounds us now.

Used to play in an abandoned rock quarry being used as a dump. Had fun throwing the used fluorescent tubes in to watch them break. That’s when is wasn’t climbing around in the upper reaches of our old barn. Somehow I’ve survived 10 times longer than I should have.

We’d be gone for hours, no phones then so Mum couldn’t call, bikes took us all over the town, but somehow we’d always be back on time for supper.

I just found my BB gun. I hadn’t even remembered where it ended up, but my Dad stashed it in a corner closet. 1954 Daisy Red Ryder. Before they left Michigan.
