    New normal….

Obviously, these Oklahomans don’t want Trump re-elected!

    ~

Oklahoma cases of COVID-19 rose by 450 on Thursday, blowing past the record 259 daily cases reported on Wednesday, as the surge of infections continued ahead of a massive rally for President Donald Trump and demonstrations set for this weekend in Tulsa.

The Oklahoma State Health Department’s daily update showed Oklahoma City added 80 cases and Tulsa added 82, as the state’s total rose to 9,354. There were two additional deaths, raising the total to 366.

The figures were released not long after Gov. Kevin Stitt participated at a roundtable at the White House and told Trump that Oklahoma was “one of the first states that has safely and measurably reopened.”

“Oklahoma is ready for your visit,” the governor said. “It’s going to be safe and everyone’s really really excited.”

The surge in COVID-19 cases in Oklahoma is being driven largely by increases among younger people, according to state Health Department figures that show 54% of the new cases in the past two weeks were people 35 and younger.

The age group most vulnerable to serious illness and death, those 65 and older, had the smallest percentage increase in cases from June 3 to 17, according to the Health Department data.

Meanwhile, hospitalizations topped 200 for the first time since May 20, rising to 211, according to information released Thursday evening.

    Ever more New Normal

    ~

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) used helicopters, airplanes and drones in more than 15 cities to watch protests over the killing of George Floyd and obtained more than 270 hours of surveillance.

According to data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) obtained by The New York Times and confirmed by The Hill, DHS surveilled demonstrations in Dayton, Ohio, New York City, Buffalo, N.Y., and Philadelphia, among other cities.

It then sent footage back to control centers managed by Air and Marine Operations, a CBP branch, that was then made available to other federal and local agencies.

The data comes amid a national conversation over the role police and law enforcement should play in dealing with protests, with scrutiny of certain local and federal tactics used during the demonstrations.

“This administration has undermined the First Amendment freedoms of Americans of all races who are rightfully protesting George Floyd’s killing,” Democrats said in a letter to acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf.

“The deployment of drones and officers to surveil protests is a gross abuse of authority and is particularly chilling when used against Americans who are protesting law enforcement brutality.”

Among the aircrafts used were AS350 helicopters and a Black Hawk helicopter. A predator drone was used twice.

    Completely normal

So why aircraft to monitor protests?

All the better to use warrant-less cell phone searches of everyone below.

    ~

    (From 11-14-2014)

That’s according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal indicating that the government has been using Cessna planes outfitted with special phone surveillance equipment to track suspects.

But the surveillance system is designed to pick up the phone signals of anyone within range. The range of the equipment is currently unknown, but it means that data on potentially tens of thousands of phones could be collected during a single flight.

The airplane-based system is a 2-foot-square box called the Dirtbox—after the Boeing subsidiary that manufactures it (the Boeing division is known as DRT, for Digital Receiver Technology Inc).

It appears to be the same or similar to so-called IMSI catchers or stingrays that law enforcement, the military, and intelligence agencies have been using for more than a decade.

The secretive stingray technology allows law enforcement agents to spoof a legitimate cell tower in order to trick nearby mobile phones and other wireless communication devices like air cards into connecting to the stingray instead of a phone carrier’s legitimate tower.

When a device connects, stingrays can see and record its unique ID number as well as information that points to the device’s location.

    One of the main problems with this surveillance method, however, is that the devices force every cell phone in a region to connect to them;

…so if a government stingray drives past your office, it will collect the signal of your phone as well as the government’s target.

That reach is magnified when the government casts its net from a plane.

Aerial surveillance is obviously much better than tracking via a van or car since vehicles can’t easily maneuver through busy streets or in rural areas.

    Aww, I guess they’re in a pod.

Some workers at the grocery store yesterday were semi-agressively breaking social distancing. May have to start using delivery.

One faint, perhaps naive hope I have is that red-state governors will become aggressively pro-mask if they deduce that the other alternatives (re-lockdowns or lots of people getting COVID) are less palatable. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1274127246404595712

And Trump’s rally ended up with what looks like maybe 5,000 attendees (with few masks and no distancing!).
