    Today is:

    National Autonomous Vehicle Day

National Smile Day. Not many smiles in the cities with the violence and looting that took place last night.

    National Macaroon Day

National Speak in Complete Sentences Day

    National Utah Day

    National Save Your Hearing Day

    Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day.

On May 31st, Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day shines a light on this rare disease, which affects the soft tissues of the skin, and if not appropriately treated, can spread quickly.

The observance offers more than information to help prevent the infection. It encourages support and provides resources to those who have been affected by the disease.

It’s important to note that necrotizing fasciitis is rare and rare still in healthy people. However, even a small cut can become infected with this bacteria. It is most commonly believed to be caused by group A Streptococcus, and recognizing the symptoms and quickly getting treatment can mean the difference between life and death.

The bacteria can enter the body through other wounds, too. Burns, bites, punctures, and even surgical incisions may be areas of entry for the bacteria.

Like many skin infections, necrotizing fasciitis may start off seemingly minor. The skin might be warm to the touch near the injury. It might even be tender. The rest of your body may ache with symptoms similar to the flu, including a fever.

However, minor symptoms can develop and change quickly. Fatigue, changes in the color of your skin, dizziness, and oozing from the infected area are just a few of the symptoms to watch for.

Riots and violence and looting in Madison last night (Chicago too, right across the street from the place my sister, Mary, works). The Madison violence happened downtown, not near the Walmart where I work, but it’s still a scary thing. I read where Walmart stores in several cities closed down until further notice due to the violence. I’m sorry about the man who was killed in police custody, but hurting innocent people won’t bring back the man who died. I’m angry too that the cop did that but the looting and setting fires to police cars and the vandalism isn’t helping anything.

Been watching too. In LA that area is where my mom and I would shop, and have lunch at the Farmers Market. In the last riot in LA they trashed the neighborhood I grew up in.

I have a robin’s nest in my garage. I have a sliding door on my garage and it fell off the track years ago so birds & other animals have easy access to to it (so do people, I guess, but it’s an unattached garage and set far back from the street so it’s not a big target for thieves. I don’t park my car in there either). I tried taking pictures and video of the baby birds a few days ago, but my camera was acting stupid and I didn’t get good pictures or video. So I tried again yesterday and I got some good video. I know I saw 3 beaks sticking up from the top of the nest a few days ago, but I only saw 2 babies yesterday and only got video of one of them, as the other one ducked further into the nest. I had to stand on a chair to get this video. And don’t pay attention to the date on the video. I have to take the batteries out of the camera after every use or the batteries drain out of power (even with the camera turned off). I have to reset the date every time I put the batteries back in. And even though I did reset the time & date, well, the camera decided to ignore my reset. Anyway, here is the video of one of the robins in my garage. They sure grow fast – it’ll be flying away before long.

“A” for effort. We had howling winds yesterday and lost nearly all the persimmons on the little tree Craig planted 2 years ago. But on a happy note, I am hearing baby house wrens in the nest box in the back of the yard, and I see parents entering the other one attached to the front of the house.

When I taught English, I had this routine to explain what a melodrama was. I’d accordion fold a piece of paper and hold on to its center. I’d put it under my nose as a fake mustache and say in an evil voice, “You must pay the rent. You must pay the rent.” Then I’d move the paper to my hair like a bow and say in a panicky girly voice, “I can’t pay the rent. I can’t pay the rent.” Then move the paper to collar level like a bow tie and say in a noble manly way, “I’ll pay the rent!” The girl would say, “My hero,” and the villain would snarl, “Curses, foiled again.” Even the “sophisticated” high school and college students enjoyed this so much I’d have to repeat the performance several more time. Most of what I taught was gone from memory within the month, but I’m sure all of them remember a teacher making such an absolute nit of herself.

Good movie. I’m surprised the villain isn’t wearing a top hat, though. Aren’t top hats required headgear for silent movie villains? XD Oh well, it’s still a good film. Today’s comic reminds me of that Gilligan’s Island episode where they make a silent movie using salvaged film equipment. In one scene, Gilligan does an impression of Charlie Chaplin. (Which is ironic, because Charlie Chaplin founded United Artists, the studio that made Gilligan’s Island.) On another note, saw a rabbit, some Wilson’s warblers, a robin and some juncos while out walking today. I also heard a raven. I think the warblers are a seasonal species, as I haven’t seen them in the Fall or Winter.
