Poor Elly. I relate. John needs to get the kids and get the job done. At least that’s what would happen in our house.
The present crisis makes putting away groceries even harder. We work together to wipe everything down with bleach wipes, or soak produce in soapy water. We even bake deli sandwich meat in the oven at 175 for awhile. We only shop online and pick up in the truck, but imagine having a new baby now, how hard that would be.
You have been three other people who should definitely know by now where the food goes. Unless you have OCD about how organized your fridge and pantry should be then I advise that John and the kids put the food away.
Before empty nest, I’d come home with a car full of groceries and a son would pop out and ask if I needed any help unloading the groceries. It was a nice perk. They didn’t put much away but the kitchen’s on the opposite side of the house from the car and I back then, I didn’t need the steps.
This is where the good Dad says something like “Don’t worry love. I can help there. You want a snack while I’m in the kitchen?” To bad we never think of that until after the fight.
Tomorrow should be “Train the kids (and John) to put them away”! If we didn’t go with my mom to the grocery store, she’d honk the horn when she got back and that was our cue to run out and bring everything in. I’ve switched it up to texting home a warning before I leave the store.
I have done this often. It relies on good grocery-bagging of the standard we usually have (they want the employees of the store to bag groceries, but if they’re busy I can sometimes do it and it’s even better). You then only bring in cold groceries, set them in the fridge and freezer, and go on about your day.
I learned pretty soon not to mention to my husband or say much about my day, because he would get aggravated like many of you. But watching babies was tiring for me. I don’t know why. Maybe it was the scorn of everyone around, thinking it was easy. Mayb4e it was the lack of adult parameters: conversations, goals, rewards? I currently (well, during the school year) have a full-time job with some work at home, am a Scout leader (also planning at home, plus weekly meetings, in local planning group, and other activities), teach Sunday school and organize an after-school science competition (teaching, paperwork, etc), plus for another 11 days a PTO board member. Still way easier for me than having a baby in the house to look after and nothing else going on. But I occasionally will do the groceries trick. Usually, my youngest daughter takes care of it or my husband now helps. Like Elly, being busy with jobs and kids both is just more satisfying and somehow less tiring or more invigorating.
I never realized before what an a$$ John is. What does he mean “what did you do today?” What does he think? Oh, that’s right, he doesn’t think. Taking care of a baby, dealing with bratty kids, keeping the house presentable, other chores. And tomorrow the same. Sorry to rant but, John ticked me off today.
Sounds normal right now. Things that need to go in the refrigerator or freezer get wiped down and put away. The rest are quarantined in the garage for a day or two.

Props to John for NOT saying what my father did about this time. “The house isn’t clean! What do you DO all day??”
(My mother handed him me and went to a friend’s house for the rest of the evening. Oh, he learned what she did all day.)
