This page is new to the “remaster”; yesterday’s strip ended with Lottie and Mildred looking out the window at a giant bowl of strawberries and cream that had magically appeared in the yard.
So that’s the biggest difference between the two versions: originally, the pencil did, indeed, cause whatever was drawn to come to life, whereas this version has the pencil cause you to draw things that are going to happen anyway. (In the original, there was really only one instance that suggested things were amiss before Mildred won the pencil (after the amusement park, Humphrey seeing something in the bushes where he says “Dobby!”); the scenes of the children being abducted from the day care were new to this version, although the timeline with Archie and Choo Choo Bear falling off the truck and CCB’s stealing the children probably fit better chronologically if the events started prior to the Mildred getting the pencil, unless there’s more time between then and the Mystery Boys investigating the abductions than it appears.)
(So apparently Steven really did win a robot in a contest, but, y’know… Tackleford.) (Zardog is still inscrutable, though, as one would expect from Zardog. We may never understand his ways, but Zardog will always live on in our hearts.)
(Also, I find it amusing that Mildred really, really wants “all dat cream”. But then, being raised vegan, it’s probably a bigger treat than the strawberries would be for her.)
