being called ‘hon’ – that there will tickle your crazy bone. I usually say “well if you’d really like to know babe”.

If I’m feeling snarky, I’m tempted to respond to “How are we doin’ today, hon?” with “Well, one of us is fine.” But I’ve gotta admit I can’t bring myself to do it, because that “hon” really does just soften me up. I’m sure that’s what they tell the waitstaff, too, just like a gentle touch on the shoulder (pre-COVID, of course) is endearing and leads to larger tips.

My mom calls everyone “Hon”. Like my other aged friend who calls everyone “Buddy”. Dementia adaptations.
