The teachers around here are mostly working online (or will be “real soon”. And most of the state highway work seems to have been called off (all that I know of). The rest of them are absolutely going above and beyond. Grocery folk too!
We’re used to being left out when it comes to recognition. We’ve never been worth a hoot when it comes to self-promotion of our discipline. Still, even though I’m long retired, I want to give a shout out to all of the social workers out there. Child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, and a host of other targets for social workers have not stopped just because there’s a pandemic.
The grocery stores are having a hard time staffing the front, understandable. A young fellow was bagging and told the cashier…“My mom wants me to stop, for now, She’s scared…” While we’re getting in and getting out they just stand there.
Don’t forget the delivery people, such as postal workers as well as warehouse workers. All those supplies people order on the internet so they don’t have to leave the house ain’t going nowhere without them. Just ask all the Amazon workers who are getting sick.
Here the list is long, except for the money people they seem to be quite. Maybe they are looking to buy the vaccine so they can brag they saved the world, at a wonderful profit.
The lady that cuts my hair (and beard) every month owns the salon but pays rent on the shop. Her other job is as a bartender. Both are shut down. She has no income.
- Unemployment Insurance is overwhelmed with applicants – duh! – and,
- Stimulus checks distribution won’t start until 20 April.
I know her well enough to know she would be adverse to accepting charity . . . so . . . I made her an offer – she accepted – and I’ve paid forward for my appointments for a year. (List prices plus tips times 12).
I figure as long as I’m on this side of the sod I’ll need haircuts and beard trims. And she and her kids will have food to eat.
We’re not heroes. We’re just doing the same job that we have always done, people just notice it now. And within a couple months, we’ll be back to being kicked, punched, assaulted, threatened, and ignored.
But we’ll still be doing the jobs that need to be done.

Pretty well a list of the lower pay categories.. while all the upper pay guys/gals are off as non-essential. Got to make you wonder about priorities.

Trumpers will demand that the top stripes in this flag should be renamed “Trump” and the rest list Trump’s buddies…

And everyone on this list is vastly under-paid! It is time corporate America ponies up on giving all the essential workers a raise.

And in countries that elect governments that care for its citizens, I would add politicians to that hero list.
