The problem with commercial health care is that businesses are about money, not people. Just in time delivery†, minimizing overhead, making sure that every bed is always occupied: Good business practice. Horrible and stupid way to prepare for the (bad and) unexpected.

    † No pun intended.

More frightening than any horror story is the current lack of advance planning for disasters on the part of all levels of government. Disasters aren’t just about terrorist attacks. This is like deciding that there will never be a hurricane again, so why plan for evacuations…

But when this is over, hopefully, soon, we’ll see, maybe, maybe not, but when this is over the markets will recover and probably recover better than ever….

To escape the boredom of self isolation, there is a new comedy/drama show on every day on every network at about 11:30. The comedy portion of the show is handled by an orange hued buffoon and his fawning albino lackey. The drama comes when the doctors and scientists take the stage and give people the facts and figures. This show is free and sometimes called the COVID-19 update. It’s fun and facts for the whole family.

Having been an IMT for many years, I know that frustrated feeling when a worker needs medical treatment and the first-aid supplies are out, not having been re-ordered by the last person who used them. How much worse, when protective gloves were gone and blood was involved (I carried extras with me). How much infinitely worse it must be when the personal protective equipment against viruses is gone.

Hoarding.. will do that. An interesting human response.. those with nothing will share what little they have.. while those with power will keep what they have and want more.

Just like the experts and scientists of the dismantled pandemic response team, says our prez “And if — if we have a need, we can get them very quickly. And rather than spending the money — and I’m a business person — I don’t like having thousands of people around when you don’t need them. When we need them, we can get them back very quickly.”

    Not quickly enough, it seems.

See? THAT is why you don’t want a business man (especially a crooked one) running the government. Nor do you want your healthcare insurance provider working on the profit motive. They only get rich by refusing to pay for your treatment.

We stopped selling N-95’s to the public and started supplying directly to our local health dept where their resources are heavily strained. I know this pisses off the hoarders but it’s the right thing to do. I have to wonder how many other hardware stores are doing something similar to support those on the front line.

And on a “semi”-unrelated note… some states have begun closing down highway rest areas, even as the Federal DOT is easing the hours of service regulations for truckers delivering emergency and medical supplies. One agency is trying to help, even as others are MAKING IT HARDER. What in the HELL is going on??? At least Pennsylvania bowed to the pressure from the Trucking industry and opened up 13 rest areas, even if the rest rooms are still closed. At least the drivers have somewhere safe to pull over and get some sleep, rather then trying to drive on when they are too tired to be safe… but some shippers and receivers are NOT letting the drivers use their rest rooms…

Not that I, personally, am a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist like Mike Luckovich, and even given the “young” Mother Hubbard vibe of the nurse, but: I think this ‘toon would have worked better if it would’ve been UNCLE SAM looking in vain for pandemic supplies. (But as Mark Twain reminds us, it’s difference of opinion that makes for horse races…….)

So, first Hank fusses that we are not improvising like he did when he was a corpsman way back when. Then he fusses when he is told that people are improvising. States he can find only one article on improvising ppe.

    https://time.com/5805557/homemade-medical-face-mask-shortage/

    https://news.abs-cbn.com/ancx/culture/spotlight/03/17/20/how-covid-19-frontliners-are-improvising-with-personal-protection-equipment-amid-lack-of-supplies

    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/03/20/viru-m20.html

    https://ph.news.yahoo.com/private-hospitals-resort-old-linens-104244554.html

So it’s not just in the Philippines. Why is he not happy to see people are doing exactly what he boasted he did as a corpsman way back when? Why is he laboring under the delusion that everyone commenting here are not taking this virus seriously. Because he is here not to “educate us” as he claims, but to stir the pot, cause conflict, and make trouble because he obviously thrives on conflict. Essentially, a troll.

Just gonna note that if ol’ Hank trained as a nurse with the Army before penicillin was around, he’d be at least 94 years old.

Azar tried to warn Trump of a possible pandemic on January 18th. He wasn’t interested.

A friend told me we are going to be “counseled” at work if we wear PPE out of personal protection in general. We are only supposed to wear if in a procedural setting or if droplet precautions are mandated. These hospitals are just welcoming the spread of this disease. In the future, less staff Will be healthy enough to work due to being exposed unnecessarily to Covid-19. When will people wake up.Health care providers need to be kept safe to provide care for the public. Plain and simple.
