Great! Just what they needed, more incentive to follow the Hawkers.

When I think “German Army” and “Winter”, “Luck” is not the next word that comes to mind.

I like the sound of this. Beastly cold winter nights, sitting in front of the fireplace, sipping on Johnny Walker over the rocks… Things could be worse.

I googled “Ice Walker” wondering if it was from some German or Nordic mythos I don’t know. (I was thinking that a Wendigo like Winnie might be called an Ice Walker and wondered if the same sort of creature was in Northern European stories). All Google came up with was some ice cleats that go on over one’s hiking shoes (including some for kids with a Frozen II logo) and several pages of entries for White Walkers from Game of Thrones.

So did Martin base the White Walkers on some existing mythological creature that this German might know as an Ice Walker?

And what makes him think that a creature like that who is traveling with the Hawkers can be made to do the German army’s bidding?

I googled Ice Walker mythology which led me to GOT and the result is that Martin likely combined Nordic Frost Giants with Sidhe and maybe a few others to create his own mythos. Here’s an interesting article https://www.bustle.com/p/george-r-r-martins-inspiration-for-the-white-walkers-from-game-of-thrones-could-explain-why-theyre-so-terrifying-13159290

Of course, this still doesn’t tell us how this relates to this story unless common inspiration.

So, the truth is coming out. HE IS FORMER THULE. And now he’s probably SS looking to forcibly recruit the supernatural to the Nazi cause.

I was listening to my local NPR station Tuesday morning and was surprised to hear a clip from someone named Melissa Wigglesworth!
