When it’s in front of us it’s called “hopes and dreams and wishes”. Once it’s behind us, it’s called “life”. The mistake is setting the hopes/dreams/wishes bar so high that life pales in comparison. Also setting a bar for “goals” helps a lot.
Maybe they are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. We’ve been going to a lot of those parties lately. Generally the couple says overall everything turned out fine.

50 seems a little young to talk about hopes and dreams in the past tense. I’m a good bit older than that and still making big plans.
