Squirrels can smell the nuts they buried under ground and under snow. One fall many, many years ago I planted a bunch of walnuts. Come Spring – no little trees growing, just torn up ground where the squirrels removed the nuts over the winter. So it’s not a fantastic memory, it’s a fantastic sense of smell that squirrels possess. Excuse me for straying off topic. Thank you.
Some dogs can wander off and become lost due to the lack of smells after it snows, especially if they’re older. It happened to my neighbor’s old lab. Luckily we found her.
Actually, dogs can smell stuff under the snow assuming that the temperatures are not dropping and the scent is being sucked down. Otherwise, trees emit smells around the tree wells. I have worked trailing dogs in the snow many times with success.
It is also how avalanche dogs can detect buried subjects and how an avalanche probe line can help aide in locating bodies after an avalanche.
OK Koko our Mr. Bo (pictured here) would put his nose to the snow and make a tunnel for himself so he got down to grass, he loved doing that as it became his bathroom too. Or sometimes he just hiked his leg on the snow.
