It can be a source of great anguish. My nephew had severe psychological problems, to the point of attempting suicide, because of it. It took a while but he’s well adjusted now.
The problem with being gay, as far as I can tell, is mostly the fact that there are people who want to literally bash anybody who’s not toeing the hetero line.

I remember that feeling. Not fun. An exchange I had a with a friend back in those days….
Friend – “Hey, you have changed your look a lot.”
Me – “Do you think it makes me look gay ?!?”
Friend – “Huh? Why do you think I think it makes you look gay?”
Me – “Nothing, Sorry”
Friend – “Since you brought it up…are you gay?”
