While the Democrats need to get it together, I’m not sure running a billionaire against a self-proclaimed billionaire is really the preferred message here.
Time for all these billionaires to stop the self aggrandizement. I like Mike B. think he was a good Mayor – might be a good Pres. but he needs to earn his spurs. We’ve seen what “Businessmen” can do. It ain’t pretty. Being a politician is a profession, let’s get real – it takes years and years to meet ‘n greet, learn who does what in govt, know who to call, you just don’t walk in to the White House and start barking orders. Oh wait! you can . . . and we know how that turns out. SOooo Billionaires – form a Democratic PAC match Sheldon Adleson, the Kochs and anyone else on the GOP side who is pretty sure they own the candidate and the system -and then step away and let the candidate and then the voters decide. Sounds so simple. Too bad it isn’t.
Bill Maher and his guests said they wast a “return to normalcy” rather than getting a more progressive choice. This “return to normalcy” was discussed by a bunch of white guys and one white woman, Judge Judy; she wants Bloomberg.
We must never loose sight of the fact that the “good old days” republicans want to return us to has very little to do with the relative wealth of any individual or group of individuals and a whole bunch to do with the social moires of the country and who controlled the country and every facet within it!
The decade spoken of most fondly by the G.O.P. was the time after the Second World War and through the first half of the 50s.
That was when white males controlled all parts of the government and the social fabric of the country; where neither minorities nor women were “uppity” and America dictated the terms of engagement to the rest of the world.
Now, most republicans don’t REALLY remember these olden times any more; what they “remember” is what their daddies told them. This golden utopia was and is basically an imaginary construct which plays into their own dreams of a “master race”; where they didn’t have to be bothered by allegations of “inequality” (where people like Representative Jordan didn’t have to worry about allegations of sexual impropriety under his academic tutelage,) If a white man did it, it, perforce, had to be good.
Why “Soak the Rich”? Won’t fly by that slogan, but a graduated income tax is good for any nation IF calculated properly. Currently the wealthy seem to have plenty to donate to their favorite candidates, provided that they pass no legislation that will affect their growing bank accounts. That includes EPA regulations, which cost their corporations some expense to dispose of chemicals properly, etc. Also, tightening financial regulations. Goldman Sachs cheated many of their own clients by advising them to buy those worthless uninsured derivative packages while they kept the insured ones for themselves, and got over $5 BILLION from the TARP bailout! Naturally G-S doesn’t want regulation! I could go on, but not here. We need to elect new people into State and Federal office who will bring back the balance we once seemed to have before Ronald Reagan got into office, beginning the current, ongoing class warfare, which THEY ARE WINNING!
A look at USA wealth inequality over time. It was very bad before and during the Depression, started improving gradually over the war and post-war years until about 1980., based on the Gini index and other measurements.
