My parents had a phone in their bedroom in addition to the one on the wall in the kitchen. When my brothers and I became teenagers, they added a cord that was long enough to reach into all of the bedrooms so we didn’t have to sit in their room to have private conversations. I don’t think I ever appreciated that enough.
For this particular comic strip to work you have to ignore the fact that we have never seen Elizabeth on the phone with any of her friends and rarely seen Michael on the phone. You also have to ignore the many comic strips where Michael and Elizabeth came over to Connie’s house with Elly and so they know perfectly well what Connie and Elly talk about.
That leaves us with the rare Molly mention. We have not seen Molly since Saturday April 15, 2017. This mention tells us that she is still in the house (or that’s what Connie wants us to believe since we will never see Molly again, only what Connie tells us.)

Aaah, the quaint old days when there was only landline and only one phone convo could happen at any particular time! How did we ever get through them?

Back in the era of the family phone I had a time limit on how long I could be on the phone, and it was definitely enforced.

I wonder what my parents talked about sometimes. Once I heard them and never wanted to know again.
