Did he also mention to me in passing the corruption related to the D.N.C. server?” Mr. Mulvaney said, referring to Mr. Trump. “Absolutely. No question about that.” He added, “That’s why we held up the money.”
Lisa doubles down with Trump and the conservatives who are apparently uninformed as to the roles involved here.
Aside from the fact that the House Democrats have made it clear that all testimony will be released publicly after redactions for classified info (and after ensuring that witnesses cannot coordinate testimony), unlike the impeachment inquiries of Nixon and Clinton, in which Nixon had a special prosecutor and Clinton had an independent prosecutor (there is a difference and the statute that gave us Ken Starr since expired), there is no such prosecutor so the committees have to do the investigations themselves.
The HOUSE brings the IMPEACHMENT — analogous to an investigation and indictment.
When the police and prosecutors are preparing a case, they investigate and question witnesses, but the suspect being investigated (or his/her attorney) does not get to sit in on the planning, the discussions or the questioning.
That did not happen in the Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton impeachment investigations.
Yes, a person accused has the right to cross examine his accusers. The indictment or the impeachment is the formal accusation. After that there is a trial. In the case of impeachment, that happens in the SENATE, NOT THE HOUSE.
THAT is the time the president and his representatives will be allowed to confront and cross-examine the accusers, not until.
I’m thinking that the whole pack of Über-rightwing cartoonists will be totally ignoring what’s going on around the Dumpster Fire, at least until Fox makes up its mind to cut their losses and deny that they ever supported this misbegotten error.
The first time a suspect should know there is an investigation, is when they knock on the door with a warrant. The entire republican party has culpability in assisting this corruption, and the gathering of primary evidence is not a public affair. The time for the public to view the evidence is at trial. The subject demanding to part of the investigation, and stonewalling at the same time is bizarre to say the least. This crying the meetings are secret is a public display of ignorance of what is happening, and how our government works.
Lisa Benson: As you well know there are Republicans at the hearings to protect their savior’s interest. Not the country’s, They are free to do what everyone else does: Leak information.
Lisa, as many Republicans, either 1. really has no idea how the impeachment process works, or 2. understands but chooses to accuse the Democrats because they are Democrats.
They pretty much are doing this is secret meetings. The only thing seeing any light are convenient leaks of testimony taken out of context to make Trump look bad. The Dems cannot win 2020 POTUS race on policy given their weak candidates so this is all they have.
This is an inquiry, not a trial. It is to everyone’s advantage, especially that of Mr. Trump, that the material discussed remains confidential until it is needed in a public proceeding.
Hilarious watching these cartoonists tie themselves into gordian knots to defend this administration while the members of it keep admitting the crimes they’ve committed.
Maybe you should take a pointer from your colleagues, Lisa, and criticize LeBron instead. Sure, there’d be plenty of hypocrisy there as well, but it’s just basketball and no one really cares.
But if the Dems ever get around to ACTUALLY impeaching, this will all become public and will land with a thud (like the Mueller disaster) in the open. THEN if they succeed in the actual impeachment, it will go to the Senate and the “secret” meetings and “phantom whistleblower” will all be on public display. I look forward to the Dems stepping on their Johnsons. :-)
If Bill Barr’s Justice Dept had done it’s job and performed its own classified investigation to present to Congress, then Congress wouldn’t have to do it themselves! Would you want charges to be presented without evidence and due diligence being done? Since the Justice Dept conducts their investigations in secret (at least initially and as a matter of procedure to prevent witness collaboration), Congress has to do the same…for now.
Secret meetings, no transcripts available, “star chamber whistleblower” with no chance to face accuser! This will go on until the ACTUAL impeachment vote when EVERY representative gets an opportunity to ask questions. Then if the vote goes to the Senate we will REALLY see who the accusers are.

Of course, Lisa, the House should follow Trump’s lead and broadcast secure information.
