This is very common around here, in lieu of ringing doorbells …
If you call before getting out of your car, someone can probably open the door, so you don’t have to stand around on the porch.
If you’re just picking people up, you can wait in the car …
let them know where you’re parked, and even remind them to bring the movie tickets (when we have theaters again), or tell them that they’ll need sweaters.
Doorbells are jarring…

I prefer the sound of a phone, plus the bonus of 2-way communication.
All this, of course, is currently suspended…

You guys have it all wrong. He took grandma out on a date; her family’s calling him, to ask when he’ll bring her back (it’s getting late, note the bugs around the porch light).

Doorbell silenced by accident. Happens at a friend’s all the time. And no; she actually likes us. Plus we bring lots of food for bbqing. :-)
