They walked AWAY!! That’s like admitting you made a mistake picking up the mags. It is a way of getting the shopkeepers’ attention.

Grant it, I haven’t bought a magazine lately; but am I really that out of touch on prices?

Yes! I think they charge more now since they aren’t selling as many.

I don’t actually buy magazines, except for that one time I mentioned the other day….

but I have looked at the prices, out of curiosity, while standing in line at stores….

or at Costco, which discounts them heavily.

I think Family Circle and Women’s Day, which were always off-price, are still about $2…

and those gossipy ones like People and US are about $3…. compared to $5 or so for Cosmopolitan.

The only magazines I’ve noticed in the $12 to $16 range are “special issues” like a commemorative of some late celebrity, or a holiday recipe collection…

so what the heck are these guys buying?

My sister recently told me she bought a Vogue or a Harper’s Bazaar … I can’t remember which…. for the first time in years, and was shocked cos it was $10 Canadian.

Come to think of it…. aren’t Betty and Bub in Canada too?

If so, that $55 is a bit over $40 US… still more than I’d think.

Maybe the cartoonists are thinking of future syndication and want the prices to still look reasonable in 2045.

I count 4 magazines, which add up to an average of $12.40 Canadian. With the 5% GST (no sales tax in Alberta) that would be a realistic amount.

For a kid that bought comic books for 12 cents and would now be paying 3 dollars the price of magazines come as no great shock. Online would be the way to go.

The same reason I don’t buy cards for people. It’s crazy when they cost as much as a pint of good beer.

Punch line worth waiting for! Yes, specialty magazines are that expensive.
