Republicons: Once again are thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the latest mass shooting in (fill in the blank). We will talk about taking action to stem this senseless violence like we really care but that’s all were going to do. If caring requires us to do something we won’t because we can’t lose support of you know who. We must address that mental health thing we talked about after the last shooting. That will work until the next time. Thanks.
Wow, confiscating that many guns sure sounds like a headache! Good thing nobody on the left is seriously proposing such a thing – just background checks, waiting periods, bans on assault weapons and extended mags, etc., none of which are any threat to your precious, badly misread interpretation of the 2A.
If however, you’d like to indulge in paranoid fantasies about total gun confiscation, you’d be better served looking at the right wing. Republicans have enacted gun control before – see the Mulford Act, signed into law by none other than Ronald Reagan (funny how a bunch of black guys walking around with guns is like hitting turbo boost for gun control), and as the Cult of Trump descends further into authoritarianism, the idea of a potentially armed resistance will become less and less welcome.
The U.S. needs NATIONAL gun laws. The Gilroy, CA shooter got the gun in Nevada. The constant harping about Chicago ignores the fact that the majority of the guns are NOT purchased in Illinois, they come from surrounding states with Indiana leading the pack.
All that’s needed is a ruling from SCOTUS saying… as all (few) of them did up until 2008… that the first clause in that sentence is more important than the second one. Of course, for that to happen, we’d have to have a sane person in the White House long enough to appoint the next three judges (assuming RBG will check out unfortunately soon). And enough sane non-GOP-loyalists in the Senate to allow that to happen. And even then, you can’t really predict which way a Supreme will jump on any given issue.
