One of the major motivations for second-generation and third-generation American kids, to learn the language of their parents and grandparents is so that they know what their elders are saying about them!

Conversely, it’s a good motivator for the grandparents and parents to learn English – so they know what the kids are up to!

Captain Newman, MD, Cpl Liebowitz: “In my neighborhood, you had to have five languages just to do business.” Polylingualism has its advantages.

I love it that more kids with Spanish speaking parents are speaking Spanglish. Saw it all the time when I lived in San Antonio-pop 2 million+ 60% of whom are Latino. OTOH, 1st gen American, mother and grandparents all from Norway after WWII. They taught me Norwegian as they spoke it at home. Then they all started in with English and by the time I was 7 I had forgotten the entire language

It really says volumes about the observing ability of a father that has two children (one a teenager) and never noticed that they can speak Spanish…
