Your last panel says a great deal about how conditions are for much of the working class Jen. Few of your fellow cartoonists put any light on how many of us struggle just to get by.
Even if I could afford it, why would I want a money pit like that!! I read about some guy who won $10,000,000 at lotto. He bought some multimillion dollar mansion and was in bankruptcy 3 years later.
The 3rd panel reminds me of the late Larry Hagman. He and his wife built their dream home/farm, but the energy bill was sky high. They retro fitted the place to reduce energy waste and added a whole bunch of solar panels. He liked solar so much, he became a spokesperson for a solar panel manufacturer. It tickled him to think that oil barron J R Ewing was advocating for solar.
Rent out the rooms of the big house, get a hundred pound sack of brown rice, buy a few grams of legal weed, get clothes and furnishings from the 2nd hand store and you have a new wave of hippies.
Does anybody build “houses” any more? There are McMansions, condos, and townhouses (which are just gussied up rowhouses from my youth). Hubby is having trouble with stairs; can we find a sensible rancher or split foyer?
single daughter just bought a small home(about 700 sq ft) and my husband kept thinking that she’ll never be able to re-sell it later. when you look at what these kids have going against them, I really think it was a smarter deal to buy the house. she pays less than rent for it
My son, who has no college degree (and thus no college debt) lives in a (smallish) house that I paid the down payment on. Just to make the monthly payments (and afford food, clothing, transport and some entertainment) he has found it necessary to have two housemates. It isn’t exactly an awful situation, but it sure is different than what I envision when I think of owning my own home.

It’s not just the initial cost.. It’s the taxes and maintenance fees are the deal breakers to anyone with common sense.

The cost of maintaining one of those castles is tremendous. I couldn’t afford one if it was given to me free.

Harlem started in a luxury housing boom that collapsed.

Our economy seems to be doing great! Just that it is thin and brittle not robust and thick.
