Border security was fine, is fine, will be fine. Meanwhile there are ACTUAL crises in America. Like having a leader who won’t acknowledge that we are continually being attacked by Russia, much less DO anything about it.
Trump asks for $5 billion for his wall. Trump gives trillion dollar tax cut to the 1%. 5 billion is 1/2 of 1% of a trillion. Trump should be asked if he would be willing to repeal that 1/2 of 1% for his wall funding. His answer would obviously be no, because everyone knows it is more important to protect the bank accounts of the mega-wealthy than it is to protect the border.
Once again, Lisa points out a truth of sorts about how Dems and Repubs think about immigration. We Dems see immigration as a positive for our country, something to add to our already diverse society. Repubs see the addition of newer persons as a threat to the status quo. Thus, Dems seek ways to keep the new ones in, and Repubs seek ways the wall them out.
The big lie here is that Congressional Republicans have been building anything. In the last two years they controlled the House and the Senate, and they did jacktrump about immigration. Now that the Democratic House has actually passed an immigration bill, it must be condemned by Lazy Lisa, who’s appalled by the idea of not punishing children for the sins of their parents. But, hey, “amnesty” is reserved for American soldiers who murdered children in Iraq.
You’ll note that unlike the GOP, the donkey didn’t actually tear something down: It’s propped up for the moment. PS: I’m w/ the liberals on this one: Border security is critical, yes, but the right way to get it is to make sure that most of the folks crossing are good ones, and put plenty of effort into vetting them to be sure. Rather than spending $Billions on a stupid, wasteful, ecologically and economically unsound “wall” that does little to stem the tide, and nothing to vet those who cross anyway.
@nance19oped: “Let’s start by heavily fining employers that ignore immigration rules.”
Since Mitch McConnell has the power to prevent any such legislation from being voted on (or even discussed) in the Senate, lets “start” by electing Senators with enough sense to change the Senate rules (which is up to them, according to the Constitution) so that 1) no individual or even committee can block such discussion and vote if a significant fraction (e.g., 30%) of the entire Senate requests such discussion and or vote, 2) at least a 2/3 majority vote is required to repeal such a rule, and 3) any rule requiring a minimum percentage vote cannot be changed by a vote of less than that same percentage. (We’ve already seen that requiring a 2/3 majority is meaningless if a simple majority can remove that requirement.)
I think this is a fantastic idea, wasn’t that Jesus himself who said love thy neighbor and provide for my neighbor and if your enemy slaps you on the cheek offer the other cheek. Absolutely a great idea to use wall funds to fund amnesty and citizenship programs for these wonderful immigrants. Of course no self-righteous born-again Christian would agree to this it’s all about locking them up and building and Halls everything that Jesus hated, self-righteousness self-righteousness
