Wow. Revisionist, deliberately backwards and completely false. The Trifecta of neocon propaganda.
Shame on any editor who publishes such garbage. The Freedom of Speech also protects the decision to not say anything. That is what dhould have been done here.
If Gary Varvel had covered the American Revolution, he’s have sung the praises of the Mad King, ridiculed Ben Franklin as a promiscuous sexual harasser, denounced Alexander Hamilton as an illegal immigrant, and trashed George Washington as a golddigger who married a wealthy older woman for money.
436 people lost their jobs in Plainfield, the other day, when Ryder Logsitics announced a warehouse closure. Ford is laying off 1500-2000 people in Dearborn.
Tariffs are just a Tax on Americans. The consumer and middle class always have the burden. Trump wants to bail out the farmers, of course he is not going to pay for it.
Good idea, Varvel; we’ll get all Americans to take the goods they bought that were made in China and throw them all in the bay. I’m sure all Americans will go for that.
The reality of the Tea Party is Hamilton and other merchants were losing profits because the imported tea was half the price of what they were selling. They liquored up the town drunk, Sam Adams, and a bunch of other drunks, and got them to dress as Indians and destroy the competition. That’s the true story of the Tea Party [Liberty’s Exiles, The Birth of The United States]
Varvel does have a small amount of right (hah!) on his side here: Before there were income taxes, there were tariffs which not only helped support the (small) government, but also protected the nascent US industries by raising the price of foreign goods enough so the locals could compete. Foreign governments did not retaliate, mostly because we weren’t shipping much of anything.
We are way WAY more international than that already, so of course tariffs have way WAY more consequences, mostly negative.

A very stupid cartoon.
From what rule does Varvel think Trump is trying to gain independence? China’s? Canada’s and Mexico’s? (Definitely not Russia’s.)
No, it’s pretty clear that he’s trying to free himself from the rule of law.
And by the way, Gary, the Boston Tea Party was a protest against taxes=tariffs, not an attempt to impose new ones.
What’s more, Gary Varvel is a part of “today’s media”.

Varvel must be a graduate of Trump’s School Of Unreality.

No, the comparison doesn’t hold up. So this cartoon is neither interesting nor funny.

One can hope that Mr. Varvel is saying that U.S. citizens are ready to do this with Trump’s ill-advised tariffs.

And republican conservative Fox ‘news’ would have stuck with King George.

Sadly, Varvel proudly displays his ignorance ( willful? ) about the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution!
[ I’ll bet that we won’t see his apology for this. ]

What is Mr Varvel going to do when law enforcement finally catches up with the Trump Klan and convicts them of their manifold transgressions?
