There’s a lot of misconception about the butterfly flap. Originally, it was a comment on data. If you only had 100 weather stations in the whole U.S., and your computer software did an analysis based on those 100 readings, a single odd reading ( the butterfly flap ) could affect your output enough to falsely predict a storm somewhere. If you have 1,000 or 10,000 weather stations, the effect is reduced considerably.
