Journalism can never die anymore than any other “ism”. People can stop reading and listening to the serious journalists who practice their craft with professionalism and integrity, but as long as there is one journalist left in the world the thing is alive. One tree falling in the forest can make a lot of noise, you just have to listen.
After witnessing the craven reaction of establishment media journalists to Julian Assange’s arrest I care a little less about journalism, in the US anyway, being saved if it’s the MSM variety.
Journalism is a joke. They go on the internet and repeat whatever insanity is presented on their. Then they retract whatever it was when it comes to light it was just smoke up people’s butts.
Notice how “Split up the big media companies” and “A better educated public” wasn’t on the list? Makes you wonder if the powers that be actually want to save the integrity of old school journalism.
Turning a once respected (from those outside the industry) print and media journalism into a tabloid free-for-all has made today’s journalism an embarrassing joke.
Our local weekly paper published a “story” on their website recently that consisted of a link to a podcast of a couple of their reporters discussing local events. Really, guys? If I wanted to hear people yammer, I’d listen to the radio. (which is why I don’t listen to the radio anymore, but that’s another comment) Sometimes wounds are self-inflicted.
And we read this at a site because the newspapers continue to shrink the size of the comics and decrease the number of comics they carry. I never heard of at least 2/3 of the cartoons I have read since joining, And some of them are worth following.There is a reason Cul de Sac is first on my morning list.
Journalism has not changed at all since the beginning. The method of delivery changes all throughout history. From word-of-mouth to clay tablets to chiseled stone, papyrus, parchment, rice paper, printing press, radio, TV, internet. All just the tools of journalism.
People become conservative when they age, resisting and objecting to change.
I’m not just being a wise guy when I ask when was the “golden age” of journalism. Was there ever a time when integrity trumped profit? haven’t’ the wealthy always owned the media? Haven’t journalists always been subject to the publisher’s control. hasn’t the media always been used to manufacture consent or manipulate opinion? And what of the medium? How much does the type affect the dissemination of news and opinion?

What’s needed is a way to monetize actual carefully researched stories. And people who actually want them.
What’s happened is that people want “popular” stories that may have any amount of research (but mostly not much). And kittens.

Journalism is printing stories that other people do not want to see.
Breaking into a govt computer to steal secrets is not journalism.
You got your story but now you are guilty of breaking and entering and theft as well.
