Stephen King keeps pen and paper beside the bed. He once claimed there were at least 4 ideas written down one morning, but had no memory of waking to write them.
Wow, that happens to me, but with ways to do stuff a work. I am lucky because with an Mobile device I get up and text myself. Sadly, sometimes the spell checker ‘corrects’ my idea into something I don’t understand by morning. sigh….
Seinfield had an episode similar to this situation. It turned out that the idea was a poor one. I often have dreams that are so vivid that it takes a little time to shake off the effects. I have thought about using them for the basis of a story until closer examination revealed their lack of logical flow.
Start talking to your wife about it. Vocalizing it solidifies it in your memory. The reason dreams fade is that we stop thinking on them when we wake. We usually remember the dreams we tell others about.
I composed a song in my dream once…woke up and sang it into my phone recorder so I wouldn’t forget it. The next day I listened back and realized I had just “composed” the Gillette ‘Look Sharp March’.

Oh, I know that feeling so well. I can forget things nowadays between putting my hands on the keyboard and hitting the first key. :-)

If it’s good, he’ll remember it. If it’s bad, it’s just as well he forgot.

There is a book/comic book/ movie idea I have kicked around for decades and never written
Don’t know how it works, but when I’m having trouble sleeping I run through the battle scenarios and I’m off to dreamland

Oh, for a moment there I thought he realized that he should go out and get a real job and be able to gossip around the water cooler.

A writer should always have a pen and paper nearby in case of inspiration.

Put them near your bed, not in the kitchen.
