You could try the “Emperor’s new clothes” trick. Not build any walls but really convince the “right” people that the wall being built is so advanced that it is invisible and no one see or get over, under, around or past it.
I like to have fun with pollsters around election time. It doesn’t take long to figure out what “side” they really are on and start giving them answers they don’t want. Usually ends the poll pretty fast. Works on all sides. I figure it works out pretty even.

Oddly enough, squirrels are native to these parts. The fence would likely keep them in.
