Ah, the U.S. dream of electing a noble and uncorrupted outsider who rides into D.C. on a white horse and cleans up the town to provide government for all. What we’re hearing and seeing from Trump is what one gets when a populist is elected. Great if he’s your guy, no matter how extreme his views. Not so good when he’s not.
Unfortunately, I still remember 2016. It was Trump the outsider vs Clinton, the absolute and total Washingtonian insider. I usually vote one of the independents. “None of These” or “None of the Above” should be fully counted as Valid Votes. If the majority of voters vote the “Nones,” The candidate, who receives the most votes would still be elected, but must always be reminded that he/she must work harder to gain support for re-election.
The beaker should read “Electoral College” that is the instrument that failed in this instance.
According to the rationale laid out in Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist Papers #68, the Electoral College was intended to prevent ill-equipped demagogues like trump from ever being elected.
Obviously it failed.
Ironically, it was a group of “men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice” that overturned the will of the people and landed us in this mess.
Clearly, the Electoral College is an anachronism that needs to be revisited and most likely abolished.
