I always wanted the flagman’s job – a buddy of mine got one for the summer when we were teenagers – 15 bucks an hour – for standing there turning the sign around. that was when McD’s was paying 3.50 an hour for flipping burgers. I was making $8 an hour hauling and setting up irrigation pipe all over the fields.
In some parts of Hawaii they have 3-lane roads, and they have to move the barrels every day so there are 2 lanes inbound in the morning and 2 lanes outbound in the afternoon. Cheaper than building a 4th lane, I suppose, and undoubtedly somebody took credit for job creation.
Let’s face it, there are few jobs better than mine. One of them may be the SCUBA-diver janitors I saw at the Detroit Zoo who kept the penguin exhibit clean, brushing the smudges off the underwater rocks while the birds frolicked all around them.
The other might be the guy who works for the state trying to snag a whole spectrum of cleverly obscure double entendres before they get stamped onto a plate and go driving down the road where they can only offend people who, come to think of it, have to be just as rude or it would skate right past them. I didn’t say there was any point to the job, just that it sounded like a lot of fun and a show-stopping answer to the “so what do you do for a living?” question.

OR, you could actually try looking at the scenery… lots of great things to see out through the windshield…believe me, I did if for 35 years in a semi…
