Got to disagree – the general is indeed fighting for his country. Might not agree with him all the time but I will respect him for this action. And no, he is not falling on his sword. Just more duty to his country I would think.
The evil liar Trump the dictator has temporarily stolen the country with the help of the greedy racist Republicans, but the Dems and the law are on the way thanks to the votes of the American People.
Are people really so naive as to think that (1) “immediate withdrawal” refers to a time frame in this century or (2) any announcement about ISIS is meant to be just about ISIS and not a shiny-object distraction from the continuing parade of domestic scandals and imminent government shutdown?
The problem is that he is still being a “good soldier,” who believes that everything will work out all right, and that he should resign if his commander demands it. He assumes falsely that this is (1) the moral move, and (2) somehow, a traitor to the nation should have the right to choose his successor.
His actions in the White House and now have only facilitated Trump’s ability to undertake his dangerous agenda, by minimizing it in trivial ways and presenting a false front of professionalism where he could.
As a cabinet member, his proper duty was to work with his colleagues to invoke the 25th Amendment. He did not, and as a consequence of his resignation and past work Trump has won the right to continue damaging this nation and its place in the world with one fewer possible opponent.
“One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships. While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies.” Gen. James Mattis SECDEF upon resigning his office.

You left out dignity … something so alien to Trump that he has no concept of it.

On the other hand, if Trump withdraws the US from Afghanistan, that might be a good thing.

Notice that Mattis said it was a privilege to serve the country and the men and women in uniform. Not Trump.

Trump will have to see who Limbaugh, Ingram and Coulter want for the new Defense Secretary. They are after all the forth branch of government.

I’d lay even money that every time Gen. Matis left the Oval Office, he had to spit.
