That’s the trouble when “The Lord is my shepherd” gets re-written as “The church is my shepherd”.

Every time you give someone power without independent supervision, it will be abused. That is characteristic for humans. Never trust the person who thinks he above that.

Why the ‘shock’? Because it’s still going on? The church has it down to a science. It’s not only the Catholics, they’re just the ones with the organizational ability to do massive cover-ups.

All of those thousands of priests that have been found to prey on their parishioners, are only the tip of the iceberg. Con men have been preying on the easily influenced forever….

My belief is that it has been going on as part of some of the priesthood for centuries. This is not something new but has come to the attention of the public outside the Catholic Church. It has not only been covered up but passed down from one generation of Priests to another. I do not believe that it is all Priests who are guilty but rather it seems like not a so small portion. I am not Catholic nor do I condemn those of the Catholic faith or the Catholic religion in general. However too many of the beliefs and rules of the Catholic church are based on the financial gain, as well as personal preferences of the individual leaders of the church than anything in the Bible. Too many of the guidelines and orders passed down from centuries ago are no more than personal preferences on how someone thought things should be done.

When your new parish priest is a guy over 40 you know he’s been shuffled to avoid getting caught in a scandal of his own making. Thank dog I’ve been atheist since age 7.

Actually, the very concept of an organization that requires absolute “celibacy” from its adherence is doomed to failure from the outset!

The closest example to “success” was the royal court of the ancient Chinese where the ‘rule’ was that ALL MEMBERS of the bureaucracy of the royal court had to be eunuchs!

And showing that abusers come in all flavors a Buddhist Monk in Beijing had to resign as he was found to have a history of assaulting nuns in a monastery. But at least they weren’t children

I’ve known Catholics who were excommunicated — i.e., deemed not fit to be members of The Church — simply because they married outside The Religion, though they themselves did nothing else “against” the teachings of The Church. Yet for all the admissions (by The Church) of willful “grievous sins” by these priests, I haven’t heard of even a single one being excommunicated.

I won’t believe that The Church — or Pope Francis himself — sincerely intends to make a fundamental change until it/he excommunicates these heretics in priests’ clothing. Don’t just censure them; don’t just send them somewhere to pray — almost certainly insincerely — for “God’s forgiveness”.

Fire” them from The Church. Then — maybe — I’ll begin to believe in the sincerity of The Pope and The Church. (I will never believe in their “infallibility”.)
