Capitalism depends on consumers, consumers depend on income, most Americans derive income from jobs, most jobs are being automated. Can capitalism survive income inequity and automation?

China is experiencing a GDP boom Image: Visual CapitalistChina’s digital economy is also experiencing a boom period. It has grown from less than 1% of the global e-commerce market about 10 years ago to 42% today. In comparison, the United States’ share of the market is 24%, down from 35% in 2005.
China’s economy will also eclipse the US economy by 2050, according to a report by professional services firm PwC, which also predicts India will overtake the US.
Interestingly enough, several posters so far have captured, in one way or another, the heart of the problem. White Nationalists (including Donnie) fail to grasp the total picture of their pathetic nativist stance. In today’s world, we must all be “globalists”! There is no such thing as “self-sufficiency”, unless a person is content to wear animal skins and catch and kill their own food with their bare hands (note to survivalists: rats are harder to catch than it would first appear!).
We are all tied to a global economy, and the successful wealthy are well aware of this. People such as Donald John Trump are also quite aware of this and, if they seem to be supportive of concentrating on a " nativist" outlook of the world (America First!), it’s only because they have a hidden agenda and are playing their supporters for the fools that they are!
Donald John Trump, in particular, is the very “model” of a modern-day Capitalist. He makes his “fortune” by an odd combination of selling and soliciting to foreign nationals, coupled with having almost all his named-brand goods being manufactured in foreign countries. And, yet, he panders to the “nativist” crowd within his ‘adopted’ political party.
We have to assume that Donnie is either an exceptional negotiator or his political base is exceedingly stupid. After observing the fruits of his negotiating skills since ascending to the American Presidency, I think we’ll all agree that the “exceptional negotiator” can be crossed off the list!
Donnie is like a starving dog. Feed him and he’s “yours” forever. And the ONLY people, internationally, willing to feed Donnie (and his overweening ego) are the world’s dictators and strongmen. Donnie also shares another trait with a hapless canine; as long as you’re willing to ‘feed’ his ego, you can be as ‘abusive’ as you want and he will never “turn” on you. This is an admirable trait in dogs – it’s less so in what purports to be human!
I’d like a strong social safety net, excellent high-speed train systems, universal health care, liberal democracy, respect for science and the Paris climate accord, generous vacations and paid family leave and bicycle-friendly cities. But I’d also like to do all that with immigrants from European and non-European cultures.
But european cultures have seen the wisdom in all those social programs. Sorry, Clyde, but we are not so appealing to european immigrants just now. Ask recently returned tourists how we are viewed. The world sees America as responsible for Trump and the world is right.

Very well said, Jen. The unfortunate thing is the number of deaf ears (numb minds might be better) your words will encounter.

His unnecessary mistreatment of brown people coming here for asylum isn’t doing so well outside of his core groups of cultists.
